Montréal composer/performer Tim Brady is a national icon in Canadian contemporary music. This astonishing guitarist’s music is not often featured in Toronto, and this all-Brady program will feature two pieces: 20 Quarter Inch Jacks, for 20 electric guitars, and 24 Frames, a solo piece for guitar, electronics and video. Tonight’s concert also marks the launch of the 3 CD + 1 DVD box set 24 Frames, available on Ambiances magnétiques.

8:00PM — 24 Frames
24 Frames is Tim Brady’s ambitious new work for solo electric guitar, electronics tape and video. A huge hit at the 2010 Bang on a Can Festival in New York, the work showcases Brady’s stunning technical prowess as a guitarist, and his mastery of form and texture, as a composer. With videos by Martin Messier, Nelly-Éve Rajotte and Oana Suteu, the project takes the idea of “the guitar solo” to a whole new level.

9:00PM — 20 Quarter Inch Jacks (for 20 electric guitars)
20 Quarter Inch Jacks re-imagines the electric guitar as an orchestra of possibilities, as a sonic counterpoint to the symphony, as the throbbing gristle of 120 strings, as the delicacy and intimacy of a single note, as the theatre of culture, technology and music. The work might be new music, it might be rock, it might be noise, it might be jazz — but it is definitely GUITAR music. For those who love the guitar, sonic adventures, and the spectacle of performance, this is a must-see show.

First performed in Montreal in 2002, where it won a Prix Opus for the production, the piece has been produced at the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival (2005) and in Los Angeles at the Redcat Theatre in Disney Hall (2009). The production at X Avant is a collaboration with the Humber College Guitar Department, under the direction of acclaimed guitarists Ted Quinlan and John Gzowski, and will showcase some of Toronto’s finest young guitar virtuosos in this dramatic 30-minute journey through the power and subtlety — yes, it is possible! — of the electric guitar.
