Event Description

NXNE:Revolvers,Mercy the Sexton,Setting Son,We Are the City +surprise +more

This is day #2 of the four days of programming NXNE/TWM have for the festival at Rancho Relaxo. Night starts at 8pm with Parkdale Hookers.

PARKDALE HOOKERS: (http://www.myspace.com/theparkdalehookers) @ 8

Starting the night is a mystery band coming recommended by the people of NXNE. Their MySpace player is even down. But they do have an epic quote on there:

“A girl came up to us and told us ‘you guys are the best 3 chord punk band I’ve ever heard, and believe me , I’ve heard a lot.’ Which I thought was odd, as we use 4 chords….”

THE POLYMORPHINES: (http://www.myspace.com/thepolymorphines) @ 9

If you come to Rancho with any sort of consistency, you’ve likely heard the Polymorphines blasting out over the PA. Theirs is one of my favourite albums to play during a show, and they are one of the best live bands going in Ontario right now. It’s rock, it’s blues, it’s punk and it is all balls while being catchy as hell — and even something you can dance to. The Polymorphines truly are the evil love child of the Golden Hands Before God and the Job.

THE SETTING SON: (http://www.myspace.com/thesettingson) @ 10 PM

This group has come all the way down from Denmark. They also go a long way to show how small the world is when you work in music. Way back in 2007, Twowaymonologues.com did a review on the Setting Son and featured them in our weekly track reviews. Now, three years later, they are showing up to play the Rancho. The Setting Son are a killer psyched-out, spaced-out rock act. They are going to slay it!

WE ARE THE CITY: (http://www.myspace.com/thecitiesmusic) @ 11 PM

The pride of Kelowna and some of the nicest guys in the Canadian music scene. We are the City seem to just travel coast-to-coast, go home and say hi to their families, and then hit the road again. But it is that tireless work ethic that is making Canadian’s take notice of just how stellar We are the City are. Here’s a review from CMW:

“…the trio showcases real frenetic energy and an ear for strong hooks. …The band wraps up, proving to be relevant, modern, and a great soundtrack for the youth culture. There’s a great familiarity to them, as they make you want to sing along, even if you don’t know the lyrics.” A’n’E Vibe – Canadian Music Week- Day 2

MERCY, THE SEXTON: (http://www.myspace.com/mercythesexton) @ 12

These Newfoundland boys won my heart at CMW a few years back. They play about the funnest brand of indie-rock anyone could ever come up with. With some new songs in the pipe, and a new album to come soon, perhaps Mercy, the Sexton will finally get the success that seemed so inevitable when we encountered them the first time. This will be a party set, I promise!

REVOLVERS: (http://www.myspace.com/revolvers) @ 1 AM

It has been far too long since Revolvers have played the Rancho. In that time they’ve released a very well-received debut album, been spoken about in the Alt-Weeklies and played some huge showcases with Dan Burke at the Dollar. Now they bring their jangly, psyched- and fuzzed-out rock back to the Ranch. Their album was even chosen as local album of the year in NOW for 2009. The live show is dynamite, and exactly the type of stuff you want at this time a night.

FREIGHT TRAINS (Surprise slot): @ 2 AM

Put your thinking hats on really tight and ask yourself, if any one band could play a surprise slot at Rancho for NXNE, who would it be? You might just figure it out. The Freight Trains are coming, watch out!

THE CHEAP SPEAKERS: (http://www.myspace.com/thecheapspeakers) @ 3 AM

Remember the set the Cheap Speakers put on last year at 3AM, after Hank & Lily? Remember that guy who was so pumped up he almost started a fight with me? What a night that was! Can it be topped? Hard to say, but the Cheap Speakers are tighter and more rockin’ than ever these days, and I would never ever bet against them.

Where: Rancho Relaxo (300 College)

When: Friday June 18th (Doors at 7:30 first band on at 8)

How Much: $TBA free with pass or bracelet.
