SUSAN JUBY IN CONVERSATION WITH IBI KASLIK
How does a bright teenage girl who falls prey to an addiction not only regain control of her life but go on to become a widely celebrated writer? To celebrate the release of her candid, witty memoir, Nice Recovery (Penguin Group Canada), Susan Juby, author of the internationally popular Alice MacLeod series, will discuss this completely hypothetical, movie of the week-type scenario with fellow novelist Ibi Kaslik. An extended Q&A will follow the interview. – A Small Print event presented with Penguin Group (Canada,) This Is Not A Reading Series (TINARS) Gladstone Hotel, The Little Paper, and Torontoist.com
Wed April 28; 7:30pm (Doors 7pm) FREE
Gladstone Hotel Ballroom, 1214 Queen St West

“Unlike many addiction memoirs, Nice Recovery isn’t a hot mess tell-all. Like Juby herself, it’s honest and funny, but avoids over-sharing. If you’re drawn to Juby’s work because she’s more Liz Lemon than Elizabeth Wurtzel, however, rest assured she hasn’t abandoned her sense of humour. As she sees it, Nice Recovery is ultimately just like all of her other books, an uneasy mixture of the dark and the light”. – Quill & Quire

NICE RECOVERY Susan Juby is well known to Canadian readers and television viewers alike for her best-selling Alice MacLeod books, and the CTV show Alice, I Think. Her memoir, Nice Recovery, will reveal another side of Juby: her battle with addiction.

Drinking at thirteen, smoking pot at fourteen and getting into speed at sixteen, Susan Juby had just about done it all by the time she turned twenty. Turning from a bright student and aspiring writer, to a jobless and alcoholic college drop-out, Nice Recovery is about what happens when teens turn the corner into true addiction. Through the author’s own personal experiences, the book details the sometimes funny and often painful experience of trying to be clean and sober at a time when most young adults are just starting their drinking careers. Juby also looks into how the situation has changed for young people washing up on the shores of addiction today through a series of interviews with young recovering addicts and alcoholics.

Told with honesty and Juby’s wry wit, Nice Recovery is a candid memoir from one of Canada’s most beloved writers.

SUSAN JUBY is the best-selling author of the internationally popular Alice MacLeod books, recently made into a television series, and the critically acclaimed novels Getting the Girl and Another Kind of Cowboy. Her work has won the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize, been selected as a Children’s Book Sense 76 Pick, A Kirkus Editors’ Choice and an ALA Best Book, and been shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and the Amazon.ca/Books in Canada First Novel Award.

Ibi Kaslik is an internationally published novelist, freelance writer and teacher. Her most recent novel, The Angel Riots, is a rock n’ roll comic-tragedy and was nominated for Ontario’s Trillium award in 2009. Her first novel, Skinny, was a New York Times Bestseller and has been published in numerous countries. Ibi teaches creative writing at The University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies.
