TWM/CMF: The Speaking Tongues, Minto, Kill the Lights, the Brother Kite

TWM is so excited for CMF this year! The good people of the festival were kind enough to allow TWM to book the vast majority of the shows and so we’ve built a string of nights highlighting some of the best music of the festival. This is the fourth out of five nights and TWM/CMF bring to you an eclectic night starting with some poppier indie rock and then cranking it up as the night goes on. Keep in mind Rancho’s license allows us to be serving till 4 am throughout the festival!

The night starts off with Kill the Lights. Now settled into Montreal Kill the Lights are an indie-pop act with strong influences of shoegaze and psych mixed throughout. Having recorded with Jace (the Besnard Lakes), seriously some of the best acts in our country record here on a consistent basis. Here is there description from the CMW website:

“Fuzzy keyboard dirges. Reverby guitars. Beautiful melodies. Bursts of aggressive electroclash. Wintry soundscapes. Throbbing drums. Fragile dynamics. Sweaty live shows. Literate lyrics. Deep links to the Toronto and Montreal indie scenes. Totally underrated.”

Then we have a special treat from Rhode Island, the Brother Kite! It has been years since the Brother Kite have come down to our fair city. A constantly buzzing band from Rhode Island, the Brother Kite have been a sleeping giant as of late working on new material and preparing to release it to the world. They are also an indie-pop band with 80’s, psych and shoegaze bursts throughout. Some newly released to myspace songs are available so go check them out.

That’s the Spirit are up next. This punchy folky indie-pop outfit from Ottawa never fails to entertain. Great melodies, harmonies and songs that never seem to be in a rush. Not to mention they feature a terrific pedal steel player which is my favourite instrument. First Toronto show in quite sometime from them!

And then its Minto! Last time Minto came to Toronto from Vancouver they had their van stolen and their tour nearly derailed. Yet the band the same day the van was stolen showed up at Rancho played their gig and slayed it. Talk about a band that won our hearts. Minto is a kick-ass rock band with a bunch of blues infused into the track. Great live act, one of the most see shows of the festival.

At 1 AM we have the Speaking Tongues! This band always cranks out an intense blues rock two-piece sound. But the bigger the show, the grander the stage, the more exciting the event is the better they get. NXNE was one of those times, CMW will be one of those times. Mark that down.

Entering the after hours we just keep the night going with Cut Throat Britva. This might be your first chance to lay your hands on their brand new EP. Cut Throat Britva is dancey/garagey indie-rock played fast and furious. A band that is compelling to watch and listen to as they always straddle right on the edge.

And then a special treat to close out the night, Hell Songs from Sweden. Hell Songs boasts a tracklist which consists of songs like “Paranoid”, “War Pigs”, “Run to the Hills” and “Jump”. Except the band plays them in trademark Swedish pop style. And yet the band has managed to make huge fans out of both the indie-pop scene and the hardcore metal scene. Tell me at 3 in the morning this isn’t going to be magical?
