TWM/CMF: Boats!, Krupke, Gypsophilia, Balthazar

TWM is so excited for CMF this year! The good people of the festival were kind enough to allow TWM to book the vast majority of the shows and so we’ve built a string of nights highlighting some of the best music of the festival. This is the third out of five nights and TWM/CMF bring to you an eclectic night featuring some of my favourite bands going right now. Keep in mind Rancho’s license allows us to be serving till 4 am throughout the festival!

The night begins with Gypsophilia! TWM veterans will remember some of the most mesmerizing sets Rancho has ever seen has come from this group from Halifax. Gypsophilia plays a swingy/jazzy form of instrumental gypsy music. The band has some of the country’s finest players and have played huge festivals to massive audiences across the country. But tonight they’ll play the much more petite Rancho Relaxo. So come early!

Then we have Balthazar who are coming down all the way from Belgium! With an upcoming album release and a insanely creative sound Balthazar, a band with but one lonely recording on myspace are a CMF wildcard who could well steal the show.

At 11 we have Toronto’s own Krupke! By now you’ve probably heard me gush about Krupke. But short and sweet I believe Krupke is one of the most innovative, original and fun bands this city has seen in quite sometime. Come and hear for yourself.

At midnight Winnipeg’s Boats! are in town. I’ve only been trying to book Boats! for about three years now so needless to say this is hugely exciting for me. Just yesterday I heard the new album for the first time and this band is poised for a huge 2010. If you like Rock Plaza Central but you always wondered what it might sound like if it were a smaller more electro outfit, well it might sound just like Boats!

Moving along Trevor James & the Perfect Gentlemen from Montreal by way of Ottawa will play. With a new album on the horizon Trevor James and his stripped back three piece outfit are ready to bring their beautiful anthemic indie-pop out to the country very soon. Trevor has one of the best voices you’ll ever hear and what you hear on album he can absolutely replicate live and then some! And well, I just tend to love a band who shares my love for the Jameson!

Then we have a special performance from Bravestation! When I listen to Bravestation now I think of them like I did Dinosaur Bones, Amos the Transparent, the Balconies etc. A true poppy indie-rock force that is just burgeoning in Toronto and about to explode outside of the city in a big big way.

And of course we close out the night in the most fitting way possible with a set from Owel Five & Corboe. If you hang around Toronto you’ve probably hung out with these guys, or caught one of their insane sets. Just this past Friday night Owel Five & Corboe’s insane hip-hop after party set ended with Owen (B’MO Crazy), myself and Greg LeGros spontaneously on stage. These guys are just exploding with energy, its positively infectious. The boys will be playing right up to last call so make sure you are ready to end your night with us!
